Allan Apone is the President and CEO of Makeup & Effects Laboratories (MEL), Inc. in North Hollywood and a multi-award nominated makeup artist. MEL, Inc. is now the oldest operating special effects makeup facility, which has provided special effects elements on over 145 films and 25 television shows since its inception. Apone, the partners and staff of Make-up & Effects Labs have received recognition from such institutions as: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Cable ACE Awards, Saturn Awards, BAFTA Awards, and The Hollywood Make-up Artists and Hairstylists Guild Awards. Film projects include XXX, Star Trek: Insurrection, Doctor Doolittle, Batman Forever, Being John Malkovich and The Drew Carey Show. More recent credits include Django Unchained, 22 Jump Street, and Marvel Films such as Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron-Man 3. Not content to rest on these prodigious laurels, the company has also since launched MEL Products, an innovator of makeup products in the industry.
Apone has served as a makeup artist on over 170 films and 150 television episodes throughout his career. For over a decade, he has been the personal makeup artist to Samuel L. Jackson on films such as No Good Deed, Changing Lanes, Formula 51, Caveman’s Valentine, Unbreakable, Shaft, Rules of Engagement, Deep Blue Sea, XXX, and many more. A member of Makeup and Hairstylist Local 706 for over ten years, he has been nominated for his achievement in makeup by the Emmys in 1993 and 1997 for Star Trek. In 1994 he was nominated for both an Emmy and ACE Award for And The Band Played On. Most recently, he was nominated in 2000 by the Hollywood Makeup Artists Guild for his work on Three Kings.
